The Short Story Analysis
The style of this short story consists of formal style. It
happens because level of complexity of this short story uses vocabulary
in high level in some parts of this short story when the author
explained the purpose of this story. The example “In the very olden time
there lived a semi-barbaric
king, whose ideas, though somewhat polished and sharpened
by the progressiveness
of distant Latin neighbors, were still large, florid, and untrammeled, as became the half of him which was
barbaric” These vocabularies are not commonly used in the general short
story, so we can analyse that it is in high level of choosing vocabulary. The
next is this short story uses varies the sentence structures. It happens because we can find simple,
compound and complex sentences in this short story. It is proved by these
examples. The simple sentence is “The institution was a very popular one”. The
compound sentence is “The arena of the king was built, not to give the
people an opportunity of hearing the rhapsodies of dying gladiators, nor to
enable them to view the inevitable conclusion of a conflict between religious
opinions and hungry jaws, but for purposes far better adapted to widen and
develop the mental energies of the people”. The complex sentence is “When
every member of his domestic and political systems moved smoothly in its
appointed course, his nature was bland and genial; but, whenever there was a
little hitch, and some of his orbs got out of their orbits, he was blander and
more genial still, for nothing pleased him so much as to make the crooked
straight and crush down uneven places”. According to these examples, we can
analyze that this short story has varies the sentence structures because the
author chooses to use the sentences that have variation types. Then, the author
has high capability in writing the short story by knowing the style of his
writing in this short story.
The following is the organization of this story is structured
because this story has the dramatic plot type and it shows that the
elements structure of this story is systematic and chronological from the
beginning to the end. The beginning side is introducing the King
characteristic, and then coming to the conflict when the King has a unique jail
to justice the commoner. Until there is conflict that his daughter or Princess
loved to the man who was commoner. Besides, the man was the young prisoner in
the king's court that would face King Area and choosing one of the doors which
were lady or tiger inside.
The next reason is because this short story uses 3rd
person omniscient point of view in the way the author to convince the
reader in delivering the plot and the purpose of this story. It shows in every
part of this story that the author knows well about all of the characters in
this story. He can know about the plot in this story and what happen in the
next part of this story. Furthermore, he can explain about the characters’
feeling also by writing this statement “How often, in her waking hours and
in her dreams, had she started in wild horror, and covered her face with her
hands as she thought of her lover opening the door on the other side of which
waited the cruel fangs of the tiger!”
The following is the structure varies of this short story
uses past tense because this story is about the kingdom in the past and how the
King at that time leaded the commoner. As we know in this statement “In the
very olden time there lived a semi-barbaric king,” According to these
characteristic in this short story, we can know that this story has formal
style.
The
tone of this short story is suspense because it is real the
condition and situation that the author wants to deliver to the reader. As we
know in this story that the king wants the boy to choose the door that contains
with the aggressive tiger, it means that the king wants the boy dead but his
daughter or the princess who loves the boy was confused and afraid because both
of the doors will separate them. Furthermore, the author can explain well about
the feeling in the King area when the commoner boy is in the King area to
decide his destiny.
The
mood of this short story is suspense. It happens because the
reader can feel how be suspense the condition in the King area. Furthermore,
when there is courtier in the King area, it will show the 2 different results
in the end based on their destiny in choosing the door. It can be the lady door
that they can marry the lady immediately or the tiger that will attack them. It
shows us that the reader can guess the suspense condition and situation in this
short story. As we know that the author uses 3rd person omniscient
point of view to convince in delivering the purpose of this short story, so it
can help the reader easier to get the real mood of this short story.
The
symbol of this short story is the tiger. It happens because the
tiger is the animal that shows the King character in this short story because
it is wild animal that can attack the victim. The king chooses the tiger to be
animal that is in one of beside the door and will attack the prison in the King
area. This tiger is the symbol of the King area and it is the symbol of the
semi-barbaric character of the King because he has injustice way to decide the
result of the prison’s mistake. Then, we can analyze that the tiger is the
symbol of this short story because it will influence the way of the plot of
this short story running.
The theme
of this short story is about tenacity and autonomy because the king decides the
fate of the person by letting both of the doors. One of the doors contains with
the beautiful lady and the different door contains with the aggressive tiger.
This short story using implied theme because we can reveal gradually through
the character of this story. The common themes of this short story using
character vs. society because the king decides the fate of the people without
an agreement from the society.
The
motif of this short story is the semi barbaric king. It happens
because the commonly showing in this short story is about the semi barbaric
king. Then, this character of king will influence all of aspects in this short
story. As we know
that based on the King’s character, the King can decide to have King Area to
administrate justice in his kingdom. Although, we can analyze that the way of
the king to decide the truth as the king in that kingdom is not right and fire.
The next
part is imagery. We cannot find the kind of imagery in this short
story because there is language that describes something
that can be seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled. This short story explains
more about the rule of King in administering justice in his kingdom.
