Stylistics (03) : Radin Jambat Drama


The Analysis of Drama Text


§  Background Information
The title of drama is Radin Jambat. This drama was written by Iskandar Syah and Ali Imron. It is a folklore from Lampung that told us the situation when man from a kingdom wants to look for the wife by fighting difficult way.  
§  The Participants in Dialogue
1.      Radin Jambat was a son of Kyai Sang Ratu Jambi (the king of Punigaran). He was dauntless and strong son. In this drama, he was told as man who looked for wife by sailing along the reaches of an ocean. He was explained as man who was always struggle and fighting every trouble and problem that block his way to get Putri Betik Hati. Then, Radin Jambat was as the main character of this drama who loved Putri Betik Hati and he did everything to get her heart to be his wife.
2.      Putri Betik Hati was the daughter of Ratu Rebut Agung who had 40 fiancées to be her husband. In this story, she was a very polite and soft woman. Thus, due to all these attitude, there were many men that wanted to be her husband.
3.      Mangkubumi was the soldier in Punigaran. He accompanied Radin Jambat to look for the wife and fought all Radin Jambat problem in the way.
4.      Kyai Sang Ratu Jambi was the king in Punigaran at that time. He was Radin Jambat’s father that had classified as wise and great king.
5.      The Queen of Punigaran was the mother of Radin Jambat. She was kind and wise queen and being good mother for Radin Jambat.
6.      Ratu Rebut Agung was the mother of Putri Betik Hati. She had kind and wise attitude for a mother and queen.
7.      King was Putri Betik Hati’s father. He was the wise and kind person who gave wisest advice to his daughter in choosing the husband. 
8.      Dewa was told as the God in this drama because he blessed human because their pray and wise. Then, Dewa gave information and direction for Raden Jambat to make coming true his dream to marry Putri Betik Hati.
9.      Setankai Ali was one of 40 fiancées who killed by Radin Jambat because he wanted to kill Raden also.     
§  The Physical Context of Interaction
The physical context of drama under the title Raden Jambat is when the son of King from kingdom in Punigaran wanted to look for the wife. Raden Jambat was as the son of King did sailing the reaches of an ocean to cover his dream for getting wife as his wise. Actually, Radin Jambat had will to marry the daughter of Ratu Rebut Agung, namely Putri Betik Hati. She was not easy woman that could be married by man. Nevertheless, her parents had several requirements to men who wanted to be her husband. When Radin Jambat wanted to deliver his intention, there are 40 men as Putri Betik Hati’s fiancées. All these men were categorised as strong and smart and they were still in the process of finishing the requirements to be Putri Betik Hati’s husband. Fortunately, after fighting all trouble in the way and getting bless from Dewa, Radin Jambat come to Putri Betik Hati and killed 40 men who stopped his purpose to marry Putri Betik Hati. Thus, without passing the requirements from Putri Betik Hati’s parents, he had passed to be her husband because he could protect Putri Betik Hati well because of his strength. Finally, they come back to Punigaran and got marriage.       
§  The Fragment of Dialogue
Radin Jambat : excuse me, good night.
Ratu                : who is that?
Radin Jambat  : my name is Radin Jambat.
Ratu                : oh Radin Jambat. Come in. Wah, you are so handsome. Kanda, Putri, jambat is coming.
Raja                 : Jambat, what do you want by coming here at night?
Radin Jambat  : here I come to tell you about my feeling to your daughter. I’m falling in love with your daughter, and I want to marry her.
Raja                 : What?! How dare you to talk like that?! Who do you think you are?! If you really love my daughter you must pass my challenge first!! You must defeat all her 40 fiances!
Radin              : Pardon me, my majesty. Not intending to be impolite, I just want to ask your permission to take your daughter as my wife. With an honour, I, Radin Jambad would like to accept your challenge.
Ratu                : Hold on my dear. Is that too much for him to be burdened by your challenge? Please, consider it wisely before you give him that challenge.
Raja                 : Please, don’t worry my dear. I only want to measure his power. I have to make sure how far he can protect our daughter. It is his responsibility to protect our daughter.
Ratu                : Okay, but I want to make sure again. I want to ask our daughter. How putri? Would you marry him?
Putri                : if Radin loves me, so I couldn’t refuse it coz I want to accompany Radin too till the end
Raja                 : okey, if each of you are falling in love too.
Radin Jambat  : thank you my majesty. Now I will bring Putri to Punigaran.
Raja                 : okey, be careful my son.
Radin Jambat  : now we should go.
§  The Questions for Drama
1.      What sorts of discourse strategies are likely to be used by the respective parties in interaction?
From discourse strategies context, the conversation above has good relevance. It means that among Ratu Rebut Agung, King, Putri Betik Hati and Raden Jambat can receive the message and utterance correctly without any misunderstanding. In addition, the characters show the actions as the context relevantly. Then, it indicates that discourse strategies of conversation above is running relevantly in context and utterance among the characters.
2.      What sorts of terms of address or politeness tactics would characterise this sort of interaction?
In one part of conversation above among Ratu Rebut Agung, King, Putri Betik Hati and Raden Jambat, there is politeness tactic in the way Raden Jambat did conversation. In this case, Radin used polite when he wanted to deliver his purpose. Thus, the polite sentences and words was used by Radin was for expressing the respect to Putri’s parents. In addition, he could directly asked permission to Putri’s parents briefly without any doubt. Therefore, politeness tactic is occurred in part of conversation above based on Radin’s attitude as explanations.         
§  Incongruity in Discourse
In drama under the title Radin Jamat, there is not incongruity in discourse. It occurs because the interactions of this drama is running relevantly without having any strange and incorrect context. All the conversation are going on as the discourse term whether it is in situation Radin against Setakai Ali.
