Grammar Analysis


§  The title of short story          : The Lady or the Tiger.
§  The author                             : Frank Stockton.
§  The summary of short story
This short story tells about the system of kingdom justice in long time ago that had unusual rules to punish the commoners who broke the laws or rules. It occurred because this kingdom had semi-barbaric king. The running of this rule was the guilty people would be in the arena that would be all people of kingdom there and gave them choices. There would be two choices that was the two doors which had lady and tiger behind both of these doors. If the guilty people chose the door which there was tiger, then the tiger would kill that people. Besides, when they chose door which there was lady, then the people would get that lady to be married. Furthermore, one day there was young courtier had screwed the princess of this kingdom. This young courtier was from lower class and then the King got embracement if it occurred. Finally, King put the young courtier to the arena to be punished because of his guilty.   
§  Explanation about the sentence
The sentence that is taken to be analysed, is using the beginning paragraph of short story. This sentence is found in the first sentence of paragraph. It is the sentence that take large influence in this short story because it explains the main character of this short story. 
§  Analysis of the sentence
ü  The first clause is Independent (α).
In the very olden time(A) there(S) lived(P) a semi-barbaric king(C),
ü  The second clause is Dependent (β).
whose ideas(A), though(A) somewhat(A) polished and sharpened(P) by(A) the progressiveness of distant Latin neighbours(C), were(P) still(A) large, florid, and untrammelled(C), as became(A) the half of him(A) which(A) was(P) barbaric(C).   
The structure of this sentence consists of subject, predicate, compliment and adjunct. Then, including the independent and dependent clauses that support this sentence.
ü  The first clause includes independent clause (α). It occurs because it doesn’t need other object or complement to describe the additional information to make it more clear and understandable. People will understand this sentence easily because it can stand alone on its own sentence.
ü  The second clause is dependent clause (β). It occurs because this clause cannot stand alone and it need to be attached to an independent clause to form a sentence. 
ü  In the first clause, the position “there” as the subject of sentence. Then, “semi-barbaric king” is as the complement of this sentence. On the other hand, the real position of “semi-barbaric king” is as object of action. It occurred because the person that is told by this sentence is actually this king.
ü  In the second clause, we have “the progressiveness of distant Latin neighbours” as the complement of this clause. Besides, the real position in doing action of this clause is as the actor of this clause. It happens because it is the kind of passive sentence that has its actor position in the complement side.
ü  In the second clause, these is “polished and sharpened”. This clause is the kind of parallelism because there is “and” as the conjunction of these two verbs and it named as parataxis or parallel sentence.
ü  In the second clause, there is predicate “were and was”. In this case, the position of both of them is for identifying something that need clarification and more information because it is nominal sentence.  
§  What question arises from the pattern?
This sentence has complicated pattern in structuring the sentence. The author also used the kind of difficult words in the way explained the message to the readers. Besides, when we analyse this sentence, we will get difficulties to recognize what kinds of positions that are had by words in this sentence. Therefore, there will be many questions arise from people who want to analyse this sentence such as where the position of each word, what the function of the word and then which independent and dependent clause.
